Burrowing Owl, Taltal, Antofagasta, Chile © Fantástico Sur ExpeditionsThe Burrowing Owl is a small nocturnal bird of prey which is widely distributed in the Americas. It is a fairly common owl species occurring in desert habitats of northern Chile. This owl is strongly territorial and occupies its burrows during several years. On these barren environs, with great presence of cacti vegetation, it feeds primarily on small birds, rodents and insects.

El Pequén es un pequeño búho de hábitos diurnos y que cuenta con una amplia distribución en las Américas. Es una especie frecuente en ambientes desérticos del norte de Chile, donde es bastante territorial, y ocupa sus madrigueras durante muchos años. En este tipo de hábitat, con gran presencia de cactus, se alimenta principalmente de avecillas, pequeños roedores e insectos.
