Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus), Chiloé Island, Chile

Momentarily abandoning its shelter in the reed bed at dawn, a Plumbeous Rail, Pardirallus sanguinolentus, probes the shallow water in the bank of a river in Chiloe Island, Chile, looking for worms and other invertebrate prey living in the mud. Unusually for a rail, it sometimes walks out in the open while hunting, especially in the dim first light of day or at dusk, allowing for brief glimpses of its otherwise secretive life.
