Closely watched by one of its parents, a young Austral Canastero, Asthenes anthoides, learns its way around a thorny world in the Patagonian steppe in Magallanes, Chile. Members of one of the largest songbird families, Furnariidae, Canasteros (genus Asthenes) are typical "Little Brown Jobs" that constitute an identification challenge and a substantial part of any birding trip in South America.
