Rufous-naped Ground Tyrant (Muscisaxicola rufivertex), Antofagasta, Chile

Rufous -Naped-Ground-Tyrant-Rodrigo-Tapia

Hovering in mid-air, a Rufous-naped Ground Tyrant, Muscisaxicola rufivertex, dives on a flying insect in an Andean river valley in Antofagasta, Northern Chile. This active and agile tyrant flycatcher stalks its prey, mainly insects, closing in on them either from a perch or from a hovering position in the air, to catch them on the ground or on the wing, and to see it hunting is one of the highlights of a birding trip to the high Andean plateau or Altiplano.
