Visit to Tierra del Fuego King Penguin colony - 22 January 2014

Our guests Bryan and Keith Grundy (USA) while enjoying themselves photographing King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonica) at the recently established, although small, breeding colony of Bahia Inutil (Useless Bay), Tierra del Fuego, Chile.

At the time of our visit (22 January 2014) there were nearly 80 individuals, several moutling adults and more importantly, nine chicks were born during this southern summer (late December and early January).

Our wishes are that these newly-born penguins can make it through the upcoming fall and winter but there are several difficulties including the lack of parental experience during the rearing period and the increasing predation by an introduced and successful mammal of the area, Mink (Mustela vison).
