Plumbeous Rail, Pardirallus sanguinolentus, Torres del Paine, Chile

Stealthily moving among the vegetation in the bank of a stream in Torres del Paine national park in Chilean Patagonia, a Plumbeous Rail, Pardirallus sanguinolentus looks for invertebrate prey in the ground.

This colourful rail spends most of the time deep into the shelter of aquatic vegetation from where it utters a loud whistling call, but sometimes walks right out in the open for brief periods of time.
